Can somebody tell me why I can't just use the USB port on the camera to my usb on the computer? Do I need the added expense of putting in a Firewire port into my computer?

Because the high-quality DV format is not supported on the USB standard. It is only supported on the Firewire standard. The USB standard only supports the low-quality video format right now.
