Photo Storage Solution

RAID-5 does NOT produce a copy of the data, that's RAID-1. RAID-5 will only protect against hardware failure of a single HD. No RAID protects you against you deleting the data, scrambling it or any other critical failure.

Raid is not as difficult or expensive as most people may think. I installed a Promise TX2000 Raid controller and configured it for mirroring. The controller cost $100. That is very cheap compared to the value of data that can be lost from harddrive failure. The previous post is correct though when saying that raid does not eliminate user error (erasing) or destruction from viruses. An offsite copy is still very useful to have.

can I run Sata & eide in the same computer??

Yes, Larry. I am running a SATA and an EIDE drive in my computer. The newer motherboards has both connectors. The older motherboards may only have EIDE connectors. You can get a SATA add-on card in that situation.

RAID5 requires at least 3 drives but more can be added. RAID1 you can do with two and is "mirroring".

As mentioned, and from personal experience, don't rely only on RAID. Besides the obvious like something happening on-site that affects the whole storage system it does not mean you'll get 100% back. Disk crash 1 I replaced the bad drive and the mirror rebuilt and saved me. Nothing lost. A couple months later Windows decided there was a logical problem with the disk drive and that it should try to fix things. It truncated everything to 32 byte files on the "bad" drive and the RAID1 hardware happily copied all the corrupt data over to the 2nd drive just in case something happened to the corrupt data on the 1st drive... Backup, backup, backup.
