I am not 100% sure without looking at the circuitry, but perhaps the flash trigger uses an SCR instead of a relay switch to fire studio flash. An SCR or transistor would probably not work well as a remote switch for a DSLR. A relay or reed switch will be prefered. It would not be difficult to modify the circuitry to turn on a reed or relay switch.

I bought a Jinbei YS-A flash trigger set and tried to trigger my Pentax ist D camera. That didn't work because te pulse delivered by the receiver is too short to trigger the camera. So I built a simple circuit to lengthen the pulse and then trigger the camera via a MOSFET. This worked fine. I don't know if this works with other cameras.

i had a 350D and i use the same method using wireless radio to trigger my 350D. I use a cheap chinese flash trigger. what you have to do is trigger it twice. you probably have to wait a second before the you can triger. test it first with out pluged in to the camera to see haw fast you can trigger it. then you can try it on the camera. so the first trigger is like waking it up, and then the second should triger the camera. good luck.

Thanks for the tip, akbarfoto. I will have to give it a try when I have time.

How'd you go with this? I have a Canon Rebel 400D and am looking for a similar solution.
