Canon unveiled an updated version of EF 14mm f/2.8L USM by adding an 'II' designation to reflect the overhaul of the lens. This Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens has been completely redesigned. It has an ultra-wide angle lens. It has a redesigned optics including two high-precision aspherical elements and two totally new UD-glass elements. It provides superior image quality.
The size of the lens is 3.1 x 3.7 inch (80mm x 90mm). The angle of view of this lens is 114 degree. The image circle is full framed (35mm). The lens gets constructed with a combination of 14 elements in 11 groups. This lens has a better contrast. The two aspherical lens elements ensure corner to corner sharpness all over the focus range and at wide apertures. Canon EF 14mm has a built-in lens hood and a redesigned lens cap. The lens cap provides secure hold to the lens hood. The lens is weather sealed. It has a good resolving power.
Canon includes large f/2.8 aperture which favors low light shooting. The minimum aperture of this lens is f/22 and the maximum aperture is f/2.8. It includes six diaphragm blades. It has a large circular aperture diaphragm which provides good background and removes distract backgrounds at wide apertures. It bears a rear gelatin filter holder. These filters have to be cut to size and installed with the lens dismounted. The circularly polarized filters cannot be used.
Some kind of flare is visible if the sun or any other bright light source is in the frame CA (Chromatic Aberration). The Chromatic Aberration is under control. Sometimes Chromatic Aberration can be seen with high-resolution digital SLRs. Distortion is very well controlled with a less barrel distortion present at close focus distances.
It features a rear focusing system which gets driven by USM (Ultrasonic Motor). The Ultrasonic Motor provides fast and clear autofocusing with excellent holding torque. The focus ring covers long tracking distance and it turns full 90 degrees. The operation of focus ring is smooth. During autofocusing, the focus ring does not turn.
The minimum focus distance is 7.9 inch (.2m) for a 0.15x maximum magnification. The lens is dust- and moisture- proofed. Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L II USM weighs 645g (22.8 ounces). Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM is a stellar lens with awesome features.
