"This Memory Stick may not record or play" Message on DSC-H20

Sony DSC-H20 display an error message: This Memory Stick may not record or play.

I just bought a new camera model Sony DSC-H20 and Sony memmory stick as recommended by Sony seller.
However, for my bad suprise the brand new camera Sony DSC-H20 display an error message: This Memory Stick may not record or play.

After insistng to play with the camera I got the following message: reinsert memory stick and Error C 13:02 afterwards.

Solution: I got a wrong speed's memmory stick card. For newer cameras make sure to have the right speed memmory stick.
For DSC-H20 the specification is Sony Magic Gate Mark2. The seller sold me the old model of Sony: Magic Gate memmory stick.
After change the memory stick finally I could have fun with this nice camera.

I have the DSC-H20 Camera. And I also get the error Message "This Memory Stick may not record or play" despite having Sony MemoryStick PRO duo Magic gate Mark2 8GB
This one has number MS-MT8G and is approved by Sony for use in this Camera. See: http://support.sony-europe.com/memstick/compatibility/compat . . .

So if i'm not mistaken, there are two conflicting information here.
1. Fabio Juliato- 21 June 09 said after changing memory stick to Mark 2, problem was resolved.
2. Krispilot- 25 July 09 said despite using Mark 2, problem persists, can anyone really tell me a final word on this issue please. My week old camera can't do much cos the it's not writing to memory stick.

All i did was press the message(touch screen) and the message disappeared and camera works as normal. Records and plays pictures and video.

The same problem here in Ecuador South America, what I do not finally understand is the fact Sony does not say anything about this...??? they should say very clear when you buy the Sony DSC h20 what kind of memory stick the buyer must use.. Now I have to buy other memory stick.. and belive me here in Ecuador prices are more expensive. Actually I do not find any memory stick mark2 of 4gb. Now I am using my camera with the error.. the memory saves and plays the files but the message allways appear.. I do not know if this will couse in the future some damage in the camera.. Someone that knows something please help..

Hi, I have an HX1 and I got a 2Gig mark 2 memory card with it, which works fine, but i had an old 4 gig which was isn't mar2 so, it gives the message but works fine. On Sony's compatibility page it is stated that it should work fine, I think this message is a mistake from Sony and a pretty annoying one.

I really don't think it can damage your camera.

You can check your compatibility for all cameras here:

Me too, same problem with a DSC-H20, "This Memory Stick may not record or play". Within 10 mins of first use it has already crashed with an error code and trashed 20 photos, whilst rebuilding the card index. So, I wouldn't trust the card with that message, as you too may lose your pics... The compatibility chart on the Sony site says the normal Pro Duo card is fully compatible....

Very annoying and I'm nervous about buying another card to 'see' if that solves it.

I have exactly the same problem with my DSC-H20. I didn't have any problems with an old 64mb Sansdisk card that I had laying around. I bought a Mark 2 Sony 4GB card as i read this was the best choice and then the warning message This memory card will not record or play pops up everytime I turn the camera on. You can get rid of it by just pressing the select button and use the camera as normal. However it is really annoying. Doens't seem as if Sony are doing anything about this problem

Same problem here with Sony MSPD8GB Mark2 on a Sony DSC-W290. Well guys, I think we all got fakes cards made in the Far East in dusty attic by underaged workers, on a nice blister to sell. After testing reading and writing speeds it's slower than a UltraII. I just hope it's not an emulation on a smaller card.
It sucks!

I just bought a DSC-WX1 today and I get same annoying message.

After reading what's out there on google, looks like you would get that message if you are using a MS Duo card that is greater than 2GB. Can someone verify? I only have 4 and 8GB cards here.

Looks like I'll be returning this camera because of that message. Sad since it's such a nice camera.

And don't even bother calling Sony support. They don't know $hit there.

Listen people, the fact that this message pops up is because you are using a fake Memory Stick.
Try to avail the original one and this message disappears. Hope it answers all your questions. :)

So, how do you know a fake from a real one. I have Sony Camera H20 and it works fine with the Memory Stick PRO Duo, Mark2, 4gb. However, I bought an 8gb just like the 4gb and I get that annoying message and after using the 8gb my camera stopped working until I put the 4gb back in.

Had the same problem . Read the above post about fake MS Duo cards. I bought mine online , overseas place. Very cheap price.
Just tried a NEW card bought at B&H ..Yep works fine.. The FAKE MS DUO card has a larger font on it . Visably not the same as the B&H "real " card.
