The Pink little Panasonic -- Lumix DMC-FS12

Panasonic's range of easy-to-use stylish and slim compact cameras has a few recent additions including the Lumix DMC-FS12. This pocket sized, point and shoot camera comes with some impressive features that are on par or even exceed the specs of offerings from most other manufacturers in this range. The dimensions of the FS12 are 9.7cm x 5.44cm x 2.17cm, which makes this a camera that is easy to carry around in your pocket or hand-bag.

Built around a 12.1-megapixel sensor, the camera has a 4x Optical Zoom lens, which is also capable of a 7.8x range in 3-megapixel setting, something that Panasonic refers to as 'Extra Optical Zoom'. The 2.7-inch 230,000-dot Intelligent LCD screen comes with a couple of settings which are helpful when using the camera outdoors in bright sunlight, while shooting with the camera held at a high angle: such as holding it high about your head to shoot over a barrier or a crowd and also a couple of power saving modes.

With a focus range of 5cm in the macro mode and between 50cm to infinity in the tele mode, the camera is adequate for general purpose photography. The MEGA O.I.S. Lens-shift stabilization results in relatively blur free images in most general situations.

For shooting the occasional movie clip, you can select between a 4:3 Aspect Ratio, which offers 640 x 480 pixels (VGA) or 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA) modes at 30 fps (frames per second); or the 16:9 Aspect Ratio which offers a 848 x 480 pixels mode (WVGA), again at 30 fps. The length of the movie clip is limited only by the size of the memory card used. Sound recording is in a mono channel format and good enough for indoor use.

Panasonic specifies a battery life of 330 pictures as per CIPA standards, with the standard Li-ion battery pack; which should mean atleast around 250 - 280 images under normal use. The other specs include the Panasonic standard iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, MEGA O.I.S. (Optical image stabilization), Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector and Face Detection with Digital Red-eye Correction.

There are five shooting modes to select from, such as the iA, Normal Picture, Motion Picture, My scene and the Scene mode. With more than 25 specific scene mode options, including high-sensitivity, fireworks, baby, sunset etc. you just need to dial in the required mode and let the camera work out the best settings.

The DMC-FS12 comes in 5 color options Silver, Black, Blue, Pink and even Green! The camera comes bundled with the PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0. software for basic image editing and organizing functions.
