[Refering to the "Error Code C:31:23?" thread.]
I had this problem too, off and on for about three years. It finally got too bad to be usable. After reading these posts, I tried the sugggested fix recently. Blowing out the mechanism with clean dry nitrogen did not help. Beating my camcorder made my problem worse. Then I took off the tape door (by removing several small screws) and I noticed that an "L" shaped metal piece that helps to align the tape, seemed to be bent at about a 30 degree angle. I bent it so that it appeared to be straight (so that the tape would rest flat against this bracket). I operated the camera without the door installed and it worked perfectly. I reinstalled the door and it still works great.

That happened to me a couple of years ago. My Sony CCD-V9 Handycam couldn't play back any Video8 tapes. I removed The door as you did. When I tried to bend the L-shaped metal, it broke off!

I had the C:31:23 error and tried tape-removal, battery removal trick to no avail. My camera has a "reset" button on the side of the camera that can be pressed with a paper clip. I pressed it and the error went away. I did need to reset all the settings like time ect.

I dropped my sony TRV-250 and was getting the same error. I also noticed the bent piece of metal and thought about bending it back. I took off the plastic cover and then noticed that the bent metal lines up exactly with the relatively large (about 2 inch diameter) tape read head at the back of the mechanism.
You can verify this by removing the plastic cover and removing the cassette tape. Then close the mechanism and watch the pin as it gets pulled toward the back of the mechanism.
Then I looked for other picures of the eject mechanism and found that it is supposed to be bent.
My problem, however is a little roller spool (that the tape rolls over) on the right side... it fell off of it's little pin and I am in the process of trying to figure out how to get it to stay put.

Thank you for saying the pin goes on the RIGHT side. I looked at my own camera and having the same pblm, used surgical forceps (my late father's) to carefully place the roller on the only thin pin that made sense. It works. Amazed. The roller slipped onto the pin and seems to work fine.

Thank you so much for the advice. When I wacked my camera to fix it, the black pin thing fell out. With your advice, I was able to replace it and my camera is now working fine!

got a maybe similar problem with the TRV11, where the tape suddenly stops and says end of tape.. even it's only 20 minutes in, when transferring to PC. Another tape stopped after 49 minutes and the remaining counter changed from 12 to 0 suddenly. Tried reset, removing battery, changing to other tapes, but nothing seems to help. If I manually roll the tape ahead it goes for some seconds or minutes and then stops again. Any suggestions?

The Settlement Class shall also include any person who received one of the listed products (hereinafter referred to as an "Settlement Class Product"), as a gift, directly from the original purchaser of the product at retail. A hearing regarding a proposed settlement of this class action will be held on JUNE 22, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. before the Honorable John A. Houston at the United States Courthouse, Southern District of California, 940 Front Street , Courtroom 11, San Diego , CA 92101-8900 . The hearing will be held to determine whether the proposed settlement is fair, reasonable, and adequate. BACKGROUND OF CASE AND SUMMARY OF LITIGATION
On October 21, 2005, Plaintiff Bruce Chabansky ("Plaintiff") filed a lawsuit in this Court against SEL alleging that several camcorders and digital still cameras sold and marketed by SEL, and manufactured by a separate entity before March 2004, contain a defective CCD imager that causes a "blank screen" or distorted image on the camcorder's or camera's viewfinder and liquid crystal display ("LCD") screen. A CCD imager is a component in the camcorder or camera responsible for sensing the light from which images are rendered or recreated. Plaintiff also alleges that if the CCD imager fails, the camcorders and cameras are incapable of recording video and images, respectively. Plaintiff further contends that SEL intentionally concealed material information about the alleged defect, and that SEL provided, disseminated, and otherwise distributed false and misleading advertisements and technical data to consumers regarding the performance, reliability, and quality of the camcorders at issue. The Court has not made a decision on the merits.
This lawsuit raises many of the same facts, issues, allegations, legal theories, and claims that were raised in a prior filed lawsuit, titled Anthony Ball et al. v. Sony Electronics Inc. , No. 05 C0307 S, in the United States District Court, Western District of Wisconsin (the " Ball Action"), brought on behalf of Wisconsin residents Anthony Ball and Shaarlynn Neeman, and a putative statewide class, by many of the same attorneys who represent Plaintiff in this action. The Ball Action was dismissed in its entirety on September 30, 2005 . Plaintiffs in the Ball Action have appealed that decision to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
SEL vigorously denies the allegations asserted in the Chabansky and Ball lawsuits, including the claim that CCD imagers in the cameras and camcorders at issue have systematically failed, or have failed at an abnormally high rate. Nevertheless, on October 2, 2005 , SEL began offering a no-charge repair of CCD imagers in the cameras and camcorders listed above, under limited conditions.
The parties have engaged in discovery, including production of documents and a deposition. On November 30, 2005 , SEL filed a Rule 12(b)(6) Motion to Dismiss that asked the Court to dismiss this action in its entirety. That motion was pending when the parties reached the settlement agreement described below.
On February 21, 2006 , the Court granted preliminary approval of the proposed settlement and ordered that this Notice be provided to members of the Settlement Class.
The parties have agreed to a settlement under the terms of an agreement signed by the parties to this lawsuit on or around February 6, 2006 ("Settlement Agreement"). Under the terms of the settlement, SEL will provide: (1) a repair-or-reimbursement remedy to every eligible member of the Settlement Class, under the conditions explained below; and (2) a service award to the Plaintiff and to two members of the Settlement Class, Anthony Ball and Shaarlynn Neeman. Under the settlement, members of the Settlement Class will release all current and future claims against SEL, and other affiliated and non-affiliated parties described fully in Section 5 of the Settlement Agreement, relating to or arising from the facts, claims, and allegations that were raised, or could have been raised, in this lawsuit.
Beginning on the date the Court issues the order granting final approval of the proposed settlement and dismissing this lawsuit and until October 2, 2007 , SEL will make available two mutually exclusive benefits to members of the Settlement Class:
If a member of the Settlement Class owns an Settlement Class Product and the product does not work due to a failed CCD imager, SEL will continue its program to repair it at no charge to the member. SEL will also pay to return the repaired camera or camcorder to the Settlement Class member. SEL will not, however, provide a no-charge repair if the CCD imager has failed, or if the product exhibits the LCD or viewfinder "blank" or distorted image problem, due to the abuse, misuse, or neglect of the product after its original purchase at retail.
I f a Settlement Class member has already paid to have the CCD imager in his or her Settlement Class Product repaired, SEL will reimburse the member for the cost of that repair, and related shipping costs, subject to the following limitations:
• SEL shall not provide any reimbursement for the cost to repair a digital still camera listed above, and related shipping costs, in an amount that exceeds $171.00 per camera;
• SEL shall not provide any reimbursement for the cost to repair a camcorder listed above, and related shipping costs, in an amount that exceeds $271.00 per camcorder;
• SEL shall not provide any reimbursement for a Settlement Class Product that is repaired afte

This thread has fixed our problem...so far. We had the same problem 31:23 show up about 6 months ago on our PC101. We also tried the bang method and it worked for a bit, then no longer. Read this thread and discovered that we too lost the black rubber roller a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the banging loosened it. My son noticed it fell out and kept it...good thing. We looked in at all the pins it could be around the play head. One pin was thicker near the bottom and thinner near the top. We used tweezers to place the roller on this one, put the tape in and VOILA...it worked. Problem is that we don't know how to hold it on secure (same as the other guy in this thread), but we are going out today to shoot some snowboarding so we'll see how it holds up.
We still get a dewdrop error from time to time...the banging works for this but boy is it annoying.

I had the c:32:11 problem where the cassette door would not open. I did the battery trick and that worked! After opening and closing a couple of times I noticed the small black roller was loose inside. I have seen several comments about this, but no answer as to how to make the roller lock in place. There does not seem to be a top or bottom and neither way keeps the roller in place once the camera is moved around. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks again for the other info.

TRV-350: Cassette would not load. Read the thread, and used the bang on it method with the cassette door open. Was amazed at the small debris that fell out. Used air to blow in the cassette compartment but the banging with open door facing down seems to work best. Thought I kept the camera clean but stuff was there. Works so far.

I fixed my c:31:32 prob using a combo of unplugging the battery and AC wire and then resetting the reset button with a paperclip. I also really pushed the tape in (for better or worse... .I really needed to download it!!) it finally worked with ome patience and perseverence!a

I have a DCR-TRV25 and it has C31-23 error. It will not fast rewind, but will rewind if I put it in play, then press rewind. It has been like family to me for all its life, the manuals suggestions did not work, and calling Sony using their suggestion did not work, and they quoted a repair of $306,so I smacked it with love. Again, and again and with less affection. It did not work. Am reluctant to press "reset" but will do so when latest video is on the computer.
