Error code E:61:11 on SONY DCR-HC90

Please Help!
I am on vacation and no Sony service is available. Does anyone know what the error code means? I would like to use my cam for the duration of my vacation, but keep getting the error code when trying to use the camera. I also get a E:61:00 code sometimes instead.

I don't have the manual for the DCR-HC90 handy, but assuming that it is the same as the DCR-TRV350 error codes then it means:

"A malfunction that you cannot service has occurred. Contact your Sony dealer or local authorized Sony service facility and inform them of the 5-digital code."

Do you know how the camera became malfunctioned?

I just pulled out the DCR-HC90 operating guide. The E:61:xx error is the same as the DCR-TRV350:

E:61:xx / E:62:xx / E:91:xx
Contact your Sony dealer or local authorized Sony service facility. Inform them of the 5-digit code, which starts from "E."

Well it just started for no reason that I know of. I have attemted to continue to use it with some success. The error is pretty random.
I hope I can get some use out of it before I get back to the states.
Thanks for your help.

I have the same camera - it's fab. Not got that problem though. In the face of your gloom, be happy for me.

Fri, 22 Dec 2006 00:55:19 -0800

Try turning the camera on and give it a big whack on a hard surface.Turn off and see . 3-4 for times should work. A stuck lense problem.

Sat, 20 Jan 2007 09:21:43 -0800

Wow - thanks for the great info!

My TVR22 fell out of my lab coat pocket onto a tile floor. When I started her up, error code 61.10 was flashing. I had no autofocus or zoom capabilities with the lever, and the camera indicated full zoom. The image stabilization (steadyshot) was out, too. Manual focus worked okay if I used the touch screen.

Anyway, gave it a few hard whacks of increasing intensity on different ends of the camera, turned it off and on, and now it works again!

Thanks very much!

I have a Sony DSC-P50 (8 years old)that was giving me a E:61:00 flashing error. I could tell that the camera was not focusing correctly. Turned the camera off, used the advice above, hit the camera on all sides on the palm of my hand, turned the camera on and the error was gone and the camera was focusing again.

Thu, 27 Nov 2008 17:14:35 +0000

What a life saver!!! The "good hard whack" method fixed my Sony DSC-W5! No more E:61:00 error...thank you!

Thu, 08 Jan 2009 00:23:14 +0000

E61:00 means there is a focus problem. E61:10 means there is a zoom problem. E61:11 means there is a problem with both.

Fri, 23 Jan 2009 03:49:19 +0000

I smashed mine against a wall (E61:11). It didn't help.

Thu, 05 Feb 2009 16:57:00 +0000

Have Cybershot T70 with E60 error. Turned it on hit a few times against hand and now it works. Jammed after it dropped out of my pocker

Sat, 25 Apr 2009 14:36:11 +0000

have had the camera sitting around for months with the E:61:00 problem (DSC-T70)
today decided to read the tips on this website... turned it on gave it one smack, turned it back on and it work

Thu, 04 Jun 2009 03:38:16 +0000

While smacking your camera might work, I'd try using the reset button first. It took care of my E61:00 problem. The reset button on my DSC-P50 is not identified in the manual, but I found it on the bottom of the camera. On some cameras it may be in the battery compartment or where the memory stick goes. Buy SONY!!!!!!!!!!

Yay!! thought it was a crack up when the advice i got for my E:61:00 problem was to 'wack it a couple of times' but it works!! thanx so much for helping me avoid sending it away for what im sure would have been a costly repair!!

Tue, 08 Sep 2009 18:33:38 +0000 this post and laughed my head off. Tried the no avail. My wife asked what I was doing and joined in the fun. After about 20 tries and throwing it down on the ground .... voila....Fixed. So funny. I have had this thing sitting around for 2 years...had a new one...lost it...thought I would give it a try. If yours doesnt work just keep doing it...what is the worst that can happen? Really. Thanks.

Thu, 24 Sep 2009 13:57:04 +0000

Hysterical! My husband just went out and bought a new camera. I decided to see how expensive it would be to get this one fixed. The camera just needed a pounding. Thanks.

Thu, 19 Nov 2009 17:03:36 +0000

NEVER in a million years would I thought smacking what when I bought it was a pretty expensive camera would be a good idea. I have a DCR-pc109 NTSC.

NEVER DROPPED, maintained and still received E:61:00

Of course to fix it, $100.00 just to open it up. I'd rather put the money toward a new camera.

SO, with that in mind I powered on and off a few times as a lat resort. Then laid a soft towel on the table. And gave it a few CAREFUL whacks. After three attempts it seems to have fixed the problem.

Un F'ing believable.

Sat, 19 Dec 2009 23:43:51 +0000

Wow, I baby my camera, but both the zoom & auto focus stoped working (E61:11) hate paying for repairs, so the idea of hitting my camera in order to fix it was hard to do, but as I hate paying for repairs, I decided to put my faith in the suggested fix, first a few half hearted knocks, without results, so I decided a harder surface was needed, so with the same half hearted knocks but onto a granite bench instead of wood, and presto, avoided repair bills, the problem is fixed, might try this method on other stuff lol.

Fri, 25 Dec 2009 12:02:44 +0000

Holy crap. I just woke up to my fiance laughing his head off, reading about everybody wacking there cameras. We've had the E61:11 flashing for a couple of months, and we weren't sure if we should spend the money to send it in or just buy new one. And all be darned, the wacking worked. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!!

Tue, 05 Jan 2010 19:18:14 +0000

Abs

Fri, 22 Jan 2010 01:08:54 +0000

Obrigado Joao!
Soh mais uma duvida. Isso tem que ser feito com a filmadora
desligada e sem a bateria, correto?

Sat, 06 Feb 2010 16:48:07 +0000

Anyone whose Sony camcorder has an error code 61.10 flashing on the screen should, first of all, try to clean the lens, before he/she takes to Sony for repair. To shake it a bit might also help sometimes. This happened to my PC-1000 a few times. I guess the dust that is on the lens confuses the camera or it blocks the zoom mechanism. Anyway it is worthwhile to try. A blow at and cleaning the lens are not going to make it worse, anyways.

Sun, 07 Feb 2010 21:00:00 +0000

IT worked. Today is June 13 2010 and I followed the advice and gave it a few good thumps near the lens cap area and on the sides of the lens area. Sure enough it worked!! I did it on a piece of carpet on a tile floor for cushioning. THANKS so much!!! The error message disappeared and now my sony handycam is back to auto-focusing!!!

Sun, 13 Jun 2010 14:10:24 +0000

E 61:11 on my Sony handycam, very irritated. Tried hitting it a couple times. Trying to ignore feeling a little crazy and imagining people all over the world mishandling cameras!! Not fixed. Help!

Sat, 07 Aug 2010 19:54:55 +0000

It is possible to remove and lubricate the lense assembly in this device if out of warranty, as E:61-- codes almost always refer to this fault. The lithium grease which is applied in the factory goes hard with age, unlike the rest of us, and it becomes impossible for the small electric motors to move the mechanism. Anyone competent to with taking stuff apart and putting it back together can do this, and get old broken stuff working again! Very green too! I have done this twice on 2 separate devices and been successful both times. Never believe it's dealer service only....

Mon, 09 Aug 2010 17:22:01 +0000

OMG my dad and i tried it we tapped the camera at the lens end all around with our palm and it worked but then the error message came up but we repeated the step and it was fine. We have a Sony DCR-SR80E

I've got a Sony HDR-SR5 High-Def camcorder that displayed the E:61:10 error code. At the advice of this forum, I smacked it against the palm of my hand quite firmly 10 or 15 different times but to no avail. I was a bit nervous about hitting it much harder but finally I just slammed it on the dining room table and sure enough, the error code disappeared and it works fine. Its hard to believe but smack the crap out of it on something hard. It saved me $341.00.

Tue, 07 Dec 2010 03:25:42 +0000

Hi All,

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Did the trick for me :). I've got a Sony DCR-HC90 with Carl Zeiss Lens and I was very disappointed when t his E:61:10 started flashing and the lens would not focus. Reading everyone's experiences, I smacked it against the palm of my hand quite firmly 2 times and it started working, although I was a bit skeptical reading all the stores here. :)

But thanks one & all.

Thank you guys so much! I have a 10 / 11 year old DSC-S30 that just started a E:61:11 error code today (fuzzy shots...) I smacked it in the palm of my hand thinking "this is a joke just to make people look like idiots."

It's now working.

Thank you!

I have a Sony DCR-HC90, maybe 6 years old. I too had the loss of autofocus with flashing error message E:61:10. After reading all of the similar posts, I reluctantly dropped my camera from 6” height onto the carpeted floor. Presto! My auto focus works just fine. Thanks to all.

Thu, 29 Sep 2011 15:56:36 +0000

Yahoo! one more camera fixed this way: instead just dropping light knocking the tip where the lenses are of hard surface covered by the soft material (you don't want to damage anything) + auto focus on-off, camera on-off multiple times. Thank you all very much! It's my daughter's first figure skating competition day and now I will be able to record at least her second program!

Sat, 17 Nov 2012 22:25:24 +0300

wow thanks for that, my wife used our sony 306e at christmas filming the kids opening the stockings in bed, she went into the lounge to film them opening their main presents and NO FOCUS E6100 ON SCREEN just looked at this site 2 hard palm slapps no costly repair bill after christmas! IT REALLY DOES WORK, TRY IT

Sun, 30 Dec 2012 19:34:33 +0300

Great! E:61:11 on my Sony DCR-HC90 is gone!
Removed the battery and hit it three times once on top on the cassette side and on the bottom and no more Error :)

Thank you!

Wed, 13 Feb 2013 04:01:48 +0300

A few whacks against my hand not only fixed the auto focus/zoom error, it also fixed the color problem that tinted everything red. I tried to focus the energy while hitting it as close to the lense as possible to maximize the energy and minimize the damage. Thank you!!!

Sun, 24 Mar 2013 09:22:33 +0300

Have had this camera for about 6 years. Never had an issue until now. Error code 61. Looked online for solutions, and got as far as being told to replace the ribbon cable. Didn't make sense, so I happened upon this site, and am sure happy I did. Just a few hits with my hand and everything is back to normal. Thank you for giving such a simple, no brainer solution! :)

Tue, 14 Oct 2014 20:24:48 +0400

Same problem - tried same fix - achieved same result.

I hit it with my Palm on all four sides turned off, then on and the error message went away.

Many thanks

Error Code E:61:11
My HDR-SR12E malfunctioned soon after being caught out in heavy rain while shooting. Lens covers failed, no auto focus and eventually the viewfinder picture area went black with an indicated error code of E:61:11 . Although I had been recording to MS Pro Duo, the hdd went through a noisy procedure at each subsequent startup before the error code was displayed again.
I took the MS out and retrieved all files OK.
I read here about giving it a strong thump but thought the better of it.
24 hours later the vital circuits had dried out and it started up normally.
Moral: If your camera gets wet from rain don't panic; Turn off the power and just let it dry out normally in a warm dry atmosphere over a day or two.
Note: This may not apply to total immersion where internal circuits short out and cause irreparable damage to microchip components.
