DCR-TRV520 PIXELING PROBLEM

I have a Sony DCR-TRV520 unit that has worked fine for years but is now experiencing a problem while recording.
It plays back fine, but when I record a program and then play it back the recording is pixeling. What I mean by that is that the display and sound jump around in small digital segments.
I tried cleaning with a cleaning tape, and same thing happens, I clenaed more thouroughly with cotten swap and cleaning solution and it seemed to help but the problem keeps coming back.
The unit is spotless inside.
When this problem occurs, I can then put a prerecorded tape in and it plays fine.
It must be something on the recording side.
When the problem first started happening it was while I was recording; I was getting the display that said cleaning cassette which according to the book said to clean the the recorder which I have done.
Maybe I am missing a part of the recorder that needs to be cleaned that I don't know about.
Any help would be appreciated.
