Aloha! Arriving at Oahu, Hawaii, the first thing I noticed is that there are tons of ABC stores in the Honolulu area. ABC stores market goods to the tourists and the locals. You can pick up souvenirs and everyday items. It's like a seven-eleven in Los Angeles. Upon collecting a hundred dollars in receipts, you can exchange for a coffee mug from any ABC store. There are two ABC stores in very close proximity to one another on the beachfront street in Waikiki; the two ABC stores are separated by only one or two other local shops. It's surprising that the competition between each store hasn't saturated the market.
One interesting thing to note is that the ABC stores in Waikiki carry storage cards. Obviously they are targeting tourists with digital cameras. It's kind of refreshing to see them next to disposable cameras and films. No doubt ABC stores sells plenty of these to photographers in need. In fact, I had considered purchasing one or two myself. Except, the stores only carried CompactFlash, Memory Stick, and SD Cards.
I brought a digital camera and a digital camcorder with me on this trip, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P92 digital camera and the Sony DCR-HC90 Handycam. Because the DCR-HC90 uses the smaller Memory Stick Duo storage cards and the Duo works in my DSC-P92 with a Sony MSAC-M2 adapter, I have stopped purchasing the larger Memory Stick.
Likewise, with the release of miniSD and microSD Cards that are useable in SD Card slots with adapters, I have stopped purchasing the regular SD Cards.
Also, I have a Minolta CompactFlash Adapter for SD Memory Cards SD-CF1 and a Sony Memory Stick Duo Adapter for CompactFlash Slot MSAC-MCF1N. These two adapters allow me to use SD Card and Memory Stick Duo in my CompactFlash devices. Therefore, I have also stopped purchasing CompactFlash cards.
So, with these considerations, ABC stores had nothing to offer me in terms of storage cards for digital cameras. It seems rather shortsighted for ABC stores to only offer the basic CompactFlash, SD Card, and Memory Stick storage cards. I think they would do much better at targeting a larger photographer population by offering miniSD Card and Memory Stick Duo at their stores. Most of these cards including free adapters as part of their packaging so that they can be used in SD Card and Memory Stick slots.
I hope, in the future, ABC stores will offer more storage card selections. Then I will be able to seriously consider them as a valuable resource for digital photographers.
