Canon Announces EDSDK 2.3 (3201-3280)

Canon Digital Camera Software Developers Kit Update Information

Attention EOS Digital SLR Software Developers:

Effective April 1, 2008, general distribution of Canon EOS Digital Camera Software Development Kit (EDSDK) Version 2.3 for Windows 2000, XP and Vista and Canon EOS Digital Camera Software Development Kit (EDSDK) Version 2.3 for Mac OS X (10.3.9 and later for PowerPC, 10.4.7 and later for Intel Mac) has begun for registered developers residing in our sales area. This new SDK supports EOS Digital SLRs with DIGIC II or DIGIC III processors exclusively. The list of supported models includes: EOS 450D/Rebel XSi, EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi, EOS 350D/Digital Rebel XT, EOS 40D, EOS 30D, EOS 20D/20Da, EOS 5D, EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III. Support for the EOS Rebel XSi has been added. Remote Live View is supported for EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS 40D, and EOS Rebel XSi.

EDSDK 2.3 is not compatible for applications that require connection via interface cable with early EOS Digital SLRs including the EOS D30, D60, 1D, 1Ds, 10D and 300D/Digital Rebel. Please continue to use RC-SDK 8.4 for connection to those models. For more information, be sure to read the API Programming Reference bundled with the EDSDK and RC-SDK downloads.

Attention PowerShot Software Developers:

Please be advised of the following information:

* The final edition of the PowerShot SDK will be released near the end of 2008. It will not be Vista-compatible. No PowerShots released after 2008 will be SDK-supported.

* The final edition of the PowerShot SDK will add support for the new G, S and SX models that are scheduled to be released this Fall.

* SDK support for EOS Digital SLRs will continue, and is already available for Vista.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

- When will the last PowerShot cameras that are supported by the SDK be released?

We cannot be specific about announcement and ship dates at this time, but it is safe to say that the last PowerShot cameras to be supported by Canon digital camera SDK will be announced and released in the 2nd Half of 2008.

- Do you have a projection on when the last camera that is supported by the SDK will no longer be available for sale?

Again, we cannot be specific, but we expect that the new G, S, and SX models to be introduced this year will continue to be sold at least through the 1st Half of 2009.

- Is it quite certain that Canon will no longer offer SDK support for the PowerShot series by end of 2008?

It is quite certain that Canon will no longer update its SDKs for PowerShot cameras after 2008.

All registered developers will be notified by e-mail whenever new SDKs become available.
