Drop Everything! Canon EOS 5D!

Ok, my co-worker just walked into my office and told me that Canon officially released a new EOS Digital SLR camera, the 5D. At first, I wasn't all that excited . . . until he mentioned it has a full-frame sensor . . . my mouth dropped.

As you all known, I am still faithful to my D30, the predecessor to D60, 10D, and 20D. Nothing could convince me to upgrade; not the faster frame rate, not the more memory buffer, not the larger image size, not the additional custom functions. But now . . . full-frame sensor.

I have wanted the full-frame sensor for a long time. Ever since I have started shooting with the D30 full-time and using its 1.6x magnification, my pictures just don't quite feel the same. They are still magnificent, but when I say, I shot that scene with a 35mm lens, it just doesn't make as much sense, even though my statement is still technically correct. Now I may actually have a good reason to upgrade.

I haven't seen the full-specs on the Canon EOS 5D yet, but I'm heading out to look at it now. You should, too!

mmmm . . . spot-metering. Yes! The Canon EOS 5D supports spot metering, a highly desirable feature on any professional camera. If you remember, in my Canon EOS Elan IIe review article, I had mentioned that spot metering is one of three features I needed the most. For film cameras, three features are highly desirable:

  • 100% Viewfinder
  • Spot-Metering
  • Reflex-Mirror (only the 1N RS had this feature)

Now that we are in the digital age and digital cameras are basic household items, I'm going to have to revise that list to four items:

  • 100% Viewfinder
  • Spot-Metering
  • Reflex-Mirror
  • Full-Frame Sensor

Canon EOS 5D came real close by meeting two out of four features. When will Canon release an EOS camera that meets all four requirements? Give me a holler when a digital SLR comes out with these four features.

> 20D better than 5D anytime.

Do I sense a bit of jealousy from a 20D user?
