Canon EOS 20Da, Japan Only
Canon Japan has this morning sprung a surprise on everyone with the announcement (in Japan only so far) of the EOS 20Da. This specialized version of the EOS 20D appears to be identical except for the removal of the 'hot mirror', the filter in most digital cameras which removes the InfraRed part of the spectrum. This camera would be especially suited to astrophotography as well as InfraRed photography, in use as a 'normal camera' it would probably require an external IR cut filter on the lens. In addition...

I had wondered when a camera manufacturer will release a full-fledge infrared digital camera in one of my recent writings (not on the web-site). I am glad that Canon had read my mind ;-) and stepped up to the plate by being the first. I wonder if infrared digital cameras will become the next consumer trend.

Apparently the excerpt from Digital Photography Review is incorrect. The 20Da does not have the IR-cut filter removed. Instead, the IR-cut filter is modified on the 20Da "to increases the sensor response to deep red wavelengths" for the purpose of astrophotography.

The 20Da also has the additional feature of an electrical viewfinder through the LCD screen on the back. A feature that is lacking on all other Canon EOS digital cameras.

More detailed description of the 20Da is located at Canon EOS 20Da DSLR.

Looks like the 20Da will finally make its way to the US and other countries. However, it is still a special order model:

"As a specialised product, the EOS 20Da is only available to order from selected dealers; each country has a number of specialist dealers that can take orders for this camera. These dealers will have the opportunity to place orders for a limited time only. Local Canon sales companies can be contacted for the country dealer list."
