Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16mm f/2.8

The latest offering from Tokina is the new Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX ultra-wide angle lens with a high speed f/2.8 aperture allowing fantastic detail and color reproduction in low light conditions and incredible clarity in normal conditions.

With its small aperture and tight focal plane this lens should be considered a must for the professional or pro-amateur. The AT-x 124 Pro DX features Tokina's unique One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism which allows the user to flip between auto focus and manual focus at just by spinning the focus ring all the way forward to place the unit in Auto-Focus mode and then simply pull the focus ring back to resume manual focus mode. This feature alone allows the user to save valuable seconds for that split second shot. This system communicates directly with the camera so there is no need to adjust any settings on the camera body itself.

To maintain the optical quality that Tokina is famous for, the Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16mm f/2.8 has a slightly shortened zoom range to compensate for the extremely high quality of it large aperture images. The nine bladed aperture produces beautiful results and creates a more circular blur on 'Boku' style image as opposed to the hexagonal shape from the fewer blades of lesser lenses. The 0.3 meter (12 inch) focal distance makes for some superb closeup shots and allows the subject of composition to be highlighted dramatically, creating some dramatic shots for both nature and product photography. This lenses also produces some stunning results when used in portraiture and can be used to great effect with a ring flash or multiple strobe rig.

The Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16mm f/2.8 uses 13 aspherical element multicoated super-low dispersion glass lenses to reduce distortion and provide the high quality images you expect from this class of lens. The quality of this lens is reflected in it's weight, the AT-X 116 PRO DX weighs in at 547.5 grams (19.3 oz), but the feel of the lens is rugged and solid lending the unit the feel of a pro lens. The AT-X 116 PRO DX suffers from a slight barre; distortion at its shortest zoom which flattens towards the longest, but this is easily corrected using Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3's 'lens distortion filter' which will allow the user to correct the distortion easily with only slight vignetting in some cases. The only down point found for this product was the lack of lens case or bag, although it does come with a hood (BH-77A).

When compared with other lenses the Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX trumps Nikon's own ultra-wide 12-24mm AF-s DX and the Canon equivalent 10-22mm. The build quality of the unit is superb and can put help add a new twist to the amateur or pro-sumers photographic repertoire.

With the Tokina's price tag of just under USD$570, superb build quality, excellent image quality and intelligent focus system this lens is a must for any serious photographer using a small format digital camera such as the Nokia D40 or D60.
