Sigma Corporation is a leading Japanese company well known for cameras, lenses, flashes and other photographic accessories. Sigma is best known for lenses and other accessories that are compatible with cameras manufactured by other companies. Sigma APO 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO is one of two virtually identical offerings from Sigma.

Sigma APO 70-300mm F4-5.6 gets constructed with a combination of 14 elements in 10 groups. The dimensions of this lens is 76.6 mm x 122 mm (Diameter x length). The aperture will be f/4 to f/5.6. The angle of view of this lens is 34.3° to 8.2°. The filter size of this lens is 58mm. The focusing type is rotating and extending. The closest focus will be 1.5m and 0.95m in case of macro mode.

Sigma APO 70-300mm F4-5.6 has a APO sister lens in the first 12mm which accommodates the AF/MF switch situated on the left of the barrel. The next third of this is occupied by the zoom ring, which is marked at 70, 100, 135, 200 and 300mm. The next part of the barrel contains a basic depth-of-field scale. On the left it has a switch which enables ߵMacro' photography. The final part of the barrel forms the focus ring. The manual focus is nicely torqued. When it gets switched to autofocus, it cannot be over-ridden and it turns stiff.

In normal mode, focusing of lens can be extended to 17mm. The macro mode allows photography to a ratio of 1:2. The macro mode works between the focal lengths of 200-300mm and is engaged by sliding the switch when the lens gets extended above 200mm. This lens has been upgraded to DG (Digitally Optimized) status seems to close the gap slightly on its more expensive sister.

The lens includes a single SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element in its construction which overcomes chromatic aberration. CA is well controlled and distortion is also well managed. The level of distortions is low across the range. It has a negligible barrel distortions at 70mm and slight pincushion distortions at 200mm and 300mm.

The lens includes a mount which suits Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Minolta and Pentax. The maximum magnification of this lens is 0.5x. This lens weighs 0.545kg. This lens has the ability to focus objects within a meter. Thus it helps the photographers who love to shoot objects much closer. The Sigma APO 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens is very light to carry. It has an excellent optical performance to its worth.
