Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM -- THE lens...

Widely known by its high performance lenses, Sigma offers another great lens for photo lovers: Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM, one of its latest lenses, presenting many features and providing high quality pictures. This lens presents compatibility for many mounts besides Sigma, such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Sony.

The 70-200mm F2.8 EX had his original version (APO) released in 1999, and from that time forth many improvements were provided. In 2005, this design was added digitally optimized lens coatings in order to reduce flare and, in 2006, it had minimum focus distance reduced to 1m. Finally, the present type features improved optical performance when compared to the previous ones.

This lens' name is full of letters, such as other Sigma's lens, but all of them have a reason why: “EX” means “Excellence”, since this is one of Sigma's premium line lenses. The lens coatings are suitable for use on digital SLR cameras, and the image circle covers 35mm format, that explains the “DG”. “Macro” refers to the minimum focus distance of 1m, closer than usual when compared to the typical 1.5m lenses of this class, properly fit for closer captures. It has a maximum magnification of 1:3.5.

The 70-200mm F2.8 II brings a complex lens construction, presenting 18 elements in 15 groups. These include two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and three Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass elements for correction of any kind of color aberrations. Besides that, flare and ghosting are reduced by super multi-layer coating.

This lens is equipped with curious gadgets like internal focusing and zooming systems. Its Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a high-speed, quiet autofocus, as well as manual focusing capability. A tripod mount collar can be easy and quickly removed form the lens.

As any wide angle zoom lens, this lens have remarkable dimensions (86.5mm x 184.4mm) and quite heavy weight (1370g). The angle of view, which is 34.3-12.3, is also relevant.

The accessories provided for this lens are the soft case, front and rear caps, and a petal-type hood, which helps in protecting the lens and minimizing inner reflection.

APO Tele Converters can be used along with this lens, amplifying its range. For example, using the 1.4 EX DG APO, it becomes a 98-280mm F4 telephoto zoom lens; using the 2x EX DG APO, you will have a 140-400mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens. These accessories are optional.

Photographers looking for a high quality lens may find in 70-200mm F2.8 II his best choice.
