Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO -- An Adorable SLR Lens with Extensive Performance

Sigma Corporation is a well known Japan based company specializing in the production of cameras, lenses, flashes and other photographic accessories. The lenses being produced by Sigma are compatible with cameras manufactured by other companies too. Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO is one such product from Sigma Corporation.

Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 has been manufactured with a combination of 14 elements in 10 groups. This lens comes with a dimension of 76.6 mm x 122 mm (Diameter x length) and the aperture of this lens ranges from f/4 to f/5.6. This lens has an angle of view from 34.3° to 8.2° and the filter size of this lens is 58mm. The focusing type of this lens features rotating focus as well as and extending focus and the closest focus obtained through this lens will be 1.5m and in case of macro mode it will be 0.95m.

Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 has an APO sister lens in the first 12mm. This sister lens accommodates the AF/MF switch situated on the left of the barrel. The next third of this is occupied by a zoom ring, which is marked at 70, 100, 135, 200 and 300mm and the next part of the barrel contains a basic depth-of-field scale. On the left it has a switch which enables ߵMacro' photography. The final part of the barrel forms the focus ring. The manual focus is nicely torqued. When it gets switched to autofocus, it cannot be over-ridden and it turns stiff. The focusing mode of this lens can be extended to 17mm in normal mode and in macro mode the focal lengths can be varied between 200-300mm.

Macro mode is engaged by sliding the switch when the lens gets extended above 200mm. The macro mode allows photography to a ratio of 1:2. This lens has been upgraded to DG (Digitally Optimized) status seems to close the gap slightly on its more expensive sister. This lens also includes a single SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element in its construction which helps in overcoming chromatic aberration by controlling and managing distortion of image. The level of distortions is low across the range. It has a negligible barrel distortion at 70mm and some pincushion distortions at 200mm and 300mm.

The lens features a mount which is suitable for most cameras from Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Minolta and Pentax. The maximum magnification capacity of this lens is 0.5x. This lens weighs 0.545kg and hence this Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens is very light to carry. This lens is also capable of focusing objects within a meter. Thus it helps the photographers who love to shoot subjects much closer. It has an excellent optical performance which makes it worth for its buyers.
