canon lens question

What do you guys think about the Canon EF 75-300mm, f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom lens for under $200?

I know the "IS" version is much better, but is it really worth the price difference for non-professional quality pictures?

The 75-300mm lens is quite enjoyable to use (see my "Some thoughts on the Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II USM lens" article). Especially being so light. It's lightness is also a curse, because it makes you think that you don't need a tripod, which is just the opposite.

I prefer the IS version for low-light opportunities and for better hand-hold shots. It's hard to say whether IS is worth the price, especially with it being twice as expensive as the non-IS version.

But with the kind of equipment I have today, and having owned the non-IS version of the lens, I would rather buy the IS version instead.

I have some gift certificates from Amazon that I was thinking of using up. I haven't seen any other deals. For $200, it may be worth it for the type of pictures I will be taking, but I do agree with you about the IS. I really like that feature. Then again, I'm still debating about the price difference.

Thanks you all the info.
