Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM -- A Prominent Lens

Canon is a Japanese multinational corporation and they are well known for optics and imaging products. Their products include cameras, steppers, computer printers and photocopiers. Canon introduced the longest tele macro lens called Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM SLR (Single Lens Reflex) Lens.

The lens gets built with a combination of 14 elements in 12 groups. The size of the lens is 186.6 x 82.5 mm (7.3 x 3.2 inches). The maximum and minimum apertures of this lens are f/3.5 and f/32 respectively. The filter size of this lens is 72 mm. The diagonal angle of view offered by this lens is 13 degree. The lens has an inner focus adjustment for focusing purpose. The minimum focus distance of this lens will be 0.48 m (1.6 inches). This is a nice macro lens with higher shutter speeds using MT-24EX macro flash. The higher shutter speed reduces the camera shake.

It bears a rotating tripod mount. This lens offers 1:1 macro working distance. It provides a beautiful background look on every focus range. It includes a ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) which focuses smoothly. EF 180mm f/3.5L can be easily used as a normal telephoto lens also. It offers fast AF which is very useful to capture the subjects quickly. The frequently used macro photography manual focus ring is perfectly placed, well damped and rotates smoothly. The color offered by this lens is very sharp. The image quality is excellent.

The control panel at the left of the barrel contains two switches, one for AF/MF and the other one for focus limitation which can be switched from full range of 0.48 m - infinity to 1.5 m - infinity. It has a broad manual focus ring which contains a 44 mm rubber ribbing get attached to it. It has a solid metal barrel which increases the lens weight a little. EF 180mm f/3.5L lens is compatible with Canon EF 2x Extender II and Canon EF 1.4x Extender II which increases the magnification from 1.4x to 2x. The DOF (Depth of Field) is very shallow at 1:1 magnifications.

The chromatic aberrations (CA) get reduced to minimum. It has no distortion. EF 180mm f/3.5L contains an ET-78 lens hood to mount lenses. It contains very narrow apertures which keep the subject in focus as much as possible. The lens weighs 1090 grams (38.2 ounces). This Canon lens has a good build quality and it can be handled with ease. This lens is a wonderful lens and is well capable to capture all sorts of things.
