Nikon 50mm f/1.8 - Canon EF adapter. Aperture ring frozen!

I just bought a Nikon 50mm f1.8, the same model here: . . .

I have one of the popular inexpensive Kawa adapters to use with it. It mounts fine to the lens and fine to the camera. However, when mounted to the camera the aperture ring is frozen, and cannot be changed. Is this the fault of the adapter, or the combination of that lens with that adapter?

Would a different adapter work fine with it?

I'm out of my depths with this and so any thoughts/advice welcome...

What camera did you mount the lens and the adapter to? Isn't this Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens a completely manual lens, meaning that you change the aperture by manually rotating the aperture ring? What do you mean that it cannot be change? The aperture ring can't be rotated? Or the aperture ring can be rotated, but the aperture blades do not close?
