Digital SLRs bring lens quandary

The 1.5 x factor when using a 35mm designed lens on a digi is a boon to sports and nature photographers. Wide angle fans are not so happy, as their lenses just don't seem so wide any more.
In my class, I have people with slow 4.5-5.6 zooms trying to catch indoor shots of their little kids with no flash. Can't been done under indoor lighting. But if they put on a 50mm 1.8 they have the equiv of a 75mm 1.8 and a LOT faster lens to give a higher shutter speed.
