Absolutely cutting edge -- The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 digital camera.

In March 09, Sony announced a new addition to its Cyber shot range, the DSC-HX1 a compact 'super zoom' model, built around a the company's newly-developed high-speed 9 mega pixel 'Exmor' CMOS sensor. The HX1 is also Sony's first camera to feature 'sweep panorama', which can capture 224 degree panorama shots.

One of the key features of the HX1 is that it utilizes a CMOS sensor, which is better and more efficient than a CCD censor used in most models. Until now a CMOS sensor was used in only the top-of-the-line DSLR cameras.

Unlike most cameras that use an electronic shutter, the HX1 uses a mechanical shutter system, which when combined with the high-speed 'Exmor' CMOS , can capture up to 10 frames per second at full 9.1 mega pixel resolution in the continuous burst mode. The HX1 is also Sony's first model to use the new 'G lens' and the Bionz processor.

The Bionz processor reduces image degradation by using on-chip Analogue-Digital conversion. Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN), Optical Steady Shot and face detection systems are also built in. Image composition can be done using the 3.0 Clear Photo LCD tilt display or via the electronic view finder.

The HX1 deals with low light conditions or moving subjects by taking six shots within a fraction of a second. These images are then superimposed and processed immediately resulting in one clear and sharp image. This technique allows the camera to feature the hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur modes, which allows for shooting in sub-optimal conditions without a tripod.

Coming back to the 'sweep panorama', this is again made possible by the Bionz processor, which allows the camera to continuously shoot high-resolution images at a high speed and thereafter the pictures are stitched together to create a up to 7152 x 1080 ultra-wide panoramic image.

The battery life with the standard battery pack is around 390 shots or up to 195 minutes of usage. Additional extended batteries can also be purchased separately.

The camera allows for 1080p HD movie clip recordings, at 30 frames per second, allowing the 20x optical zoom to be used while shooting and audio capture is via the built in stereo microphone.

There are also 10 tools built into the camera to help you easily retouch and enhance your pictures. The bundled Picture Motion Browser software allows you to easily transfer, manage, archive and share you photos.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is certainly one camera that has set very high standards for any other models yet to be released in 2009 and beyond.
