FujiFilm FinePix HS10 Eats Battery When It's Off?

I have a FujiFilm FinePix HS10 digital camera. It uses four AA batteries, which is quite convenient. Many times, I leave the four AA batteries in the digital camera, thinking I can pick up the camera at any time and shoot photos. Time and time again, I do that, only to find that the camera no longer turn on; the batteries are dead. It seems that if I put fresh batteries in the camera for a few weeks, then the batteries die. I've been using Alkaline batteries, which has a decent shelf life. This leads me to believe that this digital camera consume power even when it is off. Has anyone else had similar experience with this camera?
