Hi to all. I am in the same situation. My wife is in Japan visiting her parents and bought the DSC-T100 there and of course its only in Japanese. I found the below link from Sony's site with a new version of the firmware.

DSC-T100 Software Update

From the instrutions on the site it looks like this will replace the existing firmware. This new version has a fix for the USA bought cameras. Note there is a disclamier to use this only on cameras bought in the US or Canada. It may be a little risky but I don't think there is any difference in the hardware between them, so it should work.

Let me know if you try this and it works. My wife gets back on Sunday and I will try this when I get it.

Good Luck.

I'v tried this and it does not work on Japanese cameras. The menus are too hard to figure out in Japanese (I can read a little) and I leave the camera in auto mode for most part, so whilst it's a minor annoyance I can live with it.

Yep, did not work for me either, but it did update the firmware. Lucky for me my wife is Japanese and can translate the menus for me. Like you said just keep it on Auto and thats all you really need.

The firmware update is just a fix and does not include menus etc. I mailed sony and they basically said that it was released for japanese market and nothing could be done about it, but i don't see why, they just need to flash the damn firmware. I'd even pay for it.

The menu in japanese should have a choice in the set up that says do you want to change to English. Can you let your wife read the menu and see if you have the choice to change to another language. I HAVE THE SAME DAM PROBLEM & I DONT HAVE A JAPANESE WIFE !!

Just spoke to sony customer support. I'm in the same boat. no english menus and for Sony's most expensive camera, they don't have an option to fix it.

This is weird, I bought mine in japan and its multi-lanaguge... got like 8+ languages.

Press HOME
Keep moving right to the last box, after memory stick. thats settings
Press ***DOWN*** 4 Times
Center Button
Press Right to Highlight Sub-Menu
Press Right, there should be different languages available.

Hope that helps! Cheers~

I sorry to tell this, but i figrued out its "impossible to upload a diff language by software", Sony told me this.

So it's better to buy a camera with english if you want other than japanese. It's like 200$ to make Sony replace that chip which contains languages... ;/

i called sony. they told me they would be releasing firmware very soon. i think they were lying. the model that has multiple languages costs more money. the jap only model is less expensive.

Any luck guys? I just fell into the same trap... ordered the cam from Japan only to find the language menu doesn't allow any changes... why bother having it in the menu :(

I bought the Japanese version too, and don't really see it as a problem. Everything on the menu has pictures and if you've ever used a digital camera before, it should be pretty easy to figure out what everything does. In case it isn't, though, the camera comes with the english manual on CD. You can also download the english manual from sony. So... all you have to do is download that, compare it to your camera and you'll be able to figure out what each function does. It would be nice, however, if there was a hack... so I will keep searching... but if not, I won't complain. If you are thinking about buying the Japanese version, I wouldn't let the language thing stop you. Of course, right now the Yen rate sucks, so you won't save very much money. I would wait until it goes up again.

Here is an idea! Buy it from the country thats language you speak most fluently. :D

I hate telling customers that i can't do anything about their Japanese camera. Plus generally there is no international warranty.

I live in Japan and Sony are the only company that applies that nationalistic policy. The Japanese and international models are exactly the same, except for the menus. And the difference in prices is on some models up to 30% more for the international model. That is really stupid, but there is nothing you can do about it. Those of you who have lived in Japan know that you cannot make them understand no matter how much you try to explain. If you are a Sony fan like me and still want to buy, in most electronics stores they sell both Japanese and International models, but with the higher price on the international models I doubt that it would be that much cheeper than your countries. I can read the Japanese, but I find it annoying to have the menus in that Language, so when I bought my camera last year I opted to pay more for the international version. I would really love if someone finds a way to change the firmware in a software manner. That will allow me to buy the much cheaper Japanese model.....
