From: Gypsy ... It's called the "mode switch". The part costs about $80, and is not hard to replace if you are handy with tools. You can also try cleaning it

its a serial protocol, its been a while since i played around with my 990 but you either hook up the serial connector cable, which is what the mc-eu1 remote,

If you don't mind hacking into your 990, the shutter release is controlled by two switch closures - one for prefocus, the other to trip the shutter - on the
