Trouble with Sony DCR-HC26 Connection to Computer

Help me please. I have Windows Vista on my laptop. I am using a Sony DCR-HC26 Handycam. I installed the programs on the DVD which included Picture Motion Browser and Import from Handycam (Tape). I installed a cord, I believe it is an i.Link (it fits in the top slot with the USB symbol that matches the same symbol on the computer). I open up Import from Handycam and nothing happens. "Cannot find the Handycam (Tape).Check the i.LINK connection to the Handycam." is read on the screen. I have tried it off then turned the camera on, had the camera on and in the play/edit mode and nothing happens. It's like my computer doesn't recognize that anything new is added. Please help me.
I also have Sony Vegas on my computer and I would like to know if you could tell me how to capture video with that program too.
Thanks.

It's not clear whether you are using the i.LINK (Firewire/IEEE 1394) connection or the USB connection. The photo to the right shows both connectors. The connector on the left is the Firewire connector. The connector on the right is the USB connector. Which connector are you using? Based on the error message you mentioned, you should be using the connector on the left in the photo.
