Canon VIXIA HFS 100 Solid Top Camera for Average Price

If you are looking for the best HD camera that Canon makes then your next purchase needs to be the Canon Vixia HFS 100. The camera provides excellent HD quality video while being fairly intuitive and easy to use.

One of the things you will notice right out of the box is the ability of this camera to maintain focus. The internal processors do an excellent job with the camera's face detection system (making sure that the subject remains in focus). The lens is also very versatile (6.4 mm to 64 mm) and the 10x optical zoom is enough to be able to capture most shots without a problem. The quality and colors captured by the camera seem to exceed what I have found in other cameras. The pictures are crisp and rich just like you would hope them to be. The preview screen is another plus as the LCD is very crisp and easy to see, even in direct sunlight the screen remains easily viewable.

Another plus is that the image stabilization that seems better than most cameras. This allows you to take the camera off of the tripod without having to work to hard on keeping still while you are getting your shot. The best feature for me however was the pre-recording mode. As someone who inevitably misses the shot by a few brief moments this feature should save me over and over again. Another nice feature is the ability to record your shoots on SDHC cards for quick transfer to your computer. This is especially nice for this camera since it must be plugged into the wall as well as the computer to perform a data transfer otherwise.

The one weakness in this camera along with so many others is the lack of ability in low light. While it certainly is no worse than cameras I have used in the past it also unfortunately seems to be no better. The picture quality quickly becomes grainy and on at least one occasion it really struggled to maintain it's focus. You will be surprised by the amount of light sent off by the small light included with the package. Quite honestly light houses would do well to be so bright. That being said be careful with the light on close subjects as it will tend to bleach out most of what is in the shot.

Overall the Canon Vixia HFS 100 is a really solid camera. While I cannot yet speak to it's durability, I can say that it's intuitive menus and overall features will have the new user and experienced veteran shutterbug impressed with the product from the moment that they take it out of the box. I recommend this camera highly.
