Purpose of the lock/unlock switch on a SD Card

3.1 MegaPixel Digital Concepts Camera
The SD csrd ---------What is the lock/unlock switch on the card for? (Mine is 1GB)
What is that feature for?
My camera recognizes the card but only when I apply pressure with my finger on the battery cover...
Does anyone know any tricks to fix this?

When the switch is in the locked position, the data on the card can't be changed or erased. You also can't write new data to the card. See the TrackBack below for some more interesting information.

When "lock" switch is damage (the switch not function). SD reader say: SD is write protected.
Please advise what is the switch jumper to unloak it.
