Sony cuts high-definition camcorder down to size (Reuters via Yahoo! News)
This year is the year that all the camcorder manufacturers are shifting to the High Definition (HD) technology. Perhaps, this trend will boost HDTV sales and reviving its excitement. The Sony HDR-HC1 high definion recorder is small enough to stand a chance of replacing your current MiniDV and DVD camcorders. It is one of the first HD camcorders to enter the consumer market with is affordable price. It's 1,440x1,080 CMOS sensor doubles the resolution of the current DV format. Maybe we will finally be able to get decent photos from videos.

While writting my previous comment, I wondered how the Sony DCR-HC1 camcorder will record high resolution on MiniDV tapes. I found the answer, with some more DCR-HC1 specs, in "Sony shrinks HD camcorder's size and price" It turned out that it uses the HDV format, which can use current-generation DV tapes to store high-definition video. My next question was by storing high definition data, will the recording time on DV tapes be shortened? The answer is that HDV format is more condensed, and therefore, store the same length recording on tape as DV format.
