MTA Intends To Go Ahead With Ban On Photography In Subways (NY1 News)
Today is a very sad day for me when I read that the MTA in New York City is moving forward with the ban on photography in subways. Although the ban "is intended to deter terrorists from conducting surveillance inside the mass transit system", it really takes away the liberty and freedom from everyone else. Time and time again, our rights are being taken away due to a few bad apples in the world. And even though we have to keep these bad apples at bay, individual freedom and rights cannot be compromised. Banning photography in the subway is probably one of the worst solutions, because the only thing it does is keep good citizens at bay and nothing else. 1) Terrorists and spys can still shoot picture with miniature spy cameras; 2) They can still shoot publically and pay a $25 fine; 3) They can pose as media and obtain authorization, which would allow them to shoot as much as they desire. So how does this ban keep terrorists from obtaining intelligence information? It doesn't. It simply keeps everyone else from photographing and documenting the world, their lifes, and their environment. Will this ban redefines the entire street photography scene? I sure hope not. But it will reduce the amount of street photography shot in New York subways.
