Konica Minolta transforms again, this time Sony takes the leadQuite a while ago, the separate entities Konica and Minolta merged into one Konica Minolta entity to create a stronger photography business. Today, through two press releases, Konica Minolta will morph again. The two press releases are:
This time around, after the transformation, Konica Minolta will no longer participate in the photography market. Its photography business assets will be transferred to Sony, which has been partnering with Konica Minolta since July 2005 to develop a digital SLR based on the Maxxum/Dynax lens mount. The turn-over will be effective in March 31st, 2006. First DSLR to show up on the consumer market is scheduled for summer 2006. The good news is that Sony will start producing DSLR's that continues the Maxxum/Dynax line-up. Sony has been quite successful with its consumer digital cameras. It lacked DSLR's for the professional photographers. In many message posts, I had implied that Sony should start thinking about filling the niche. It turns out that they have already started the process. If Sony can be as successful with this DSLR venture as its consumer digital cameras, then we may see three strong DSLR companies (Canon, Nikon, and Sony) in the future.
