Sigma 28-70mm F2.8-4 DG Review

Sigma lenses are widely known for their optics & build quality. This lens is not the exception to the reputation of company.

The SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8-4 DG provides good zoom range of wide to tele for landscape photography, street photography & shooting portraits. As well as one can use it in general functions.

The lens proves good when we use it with a full frame (24mm X 36mm) sensor as it provides the exact focal length of 28-70mm. But I personally would not recommend it to use with APS-C sized sensor.

When used with APS-C sensor sized cameras the lens produces the focal length of approximately 42-105mm what is not much useful for wide angle shots as the average crop factor among all the APS-C sensor cameras is 1.5x.

Apart from the focal length the lens body is perfectly built up & feels sturdy. Lens is constructed with 11 elements in 8 groups including one aspherical glass element to provide crystal clear image quality & controlled abbrations, flares & ghostings.

The lens has good apperture value at wide end that is 2.8 wich provides minimum focusing distance of 50cm. But lacks at tele end with f4 at the greatest so that the lens does lose the speed & shallow depth of field at the maximum focal length. This could be the disadvantage in the lens.

Image quality is quite impressive. The lens provides crystal clear images with very much controlled distortions at wide end. Sharpness is also very impressive even at the wide appertures. Quality is at the best at its minimum apperture that is f22.

The lens provides maximum magnification of 1:6.5 that is not the best but could be useful for some macro shots at wide.

The lens weighs only 245g that makes it handy to carry any where and proves better while doing street photography.

Through all aspects we can say the lens can be good value for money to the one who have a full frame D-SLR as it gets sold around 500$.

The lens is available for NKON, CANON, PENTAX, SONY & MINOLTA mounts.
Final score of this lens will be 60/100 as per my studies.

Thank you !
