Lens Test Archives

For a long time I have been relying on the lens test archive created by Photodo. Back then no other publication presented online lens test archive. The only way to find out how well a lens performed was to read back-issues of printed photography magazines. Photodo was the first organization to provide a lens test archive. Photodo presented each tested lens with MTF charts and grades. All together, Photodo tested 458 lenses on the market at the time. And then stopped.

Since the time Photodo stopped testing lenses, manufacturers and photographers have gone digital. Tons of new lenses flooded the market. Photodo's lens tests may still be relevant for lenses that are still in today's marketplace. But many lens tests are now obsolete and only useful to eBay scourers.

The good news is that Popular Photography now has an online lens test archive. It contains lenses reviewed between 1999 and 2004. It doesn't seem to have lens tests prior to 1999 and no new lens test for 2005 and onward, even though the lens test for newer lenses are also on its web site.

The lens test archive is helpful for comparing lenses when you are ready to buy. I may consider compiling the Popular Photography lens test PDF's into a library for ease of access. If you know any other lens test archives, please post them in this thread.
