Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is a fantastic lens. I will start first with the simple positives about it. It has great sharpness and clarity. It has a quick auto focus and is very quiet. The dual IS system and other features make it very versatile. The only drawback is that it is big and heavy but that is normal for this class of lens.

I often use a Canon 20D and have used the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM in the past which has noticeable limitations. So I decided to try the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. I rented it before I bought it because I was uncertain about the zooming system. This is a lens with professional photographers in mind.

This lens is built with the best materials and weighs about three pounds. It can use 77mm filters and the Super UD-glass element helps to eliminate the second spectrum. Still you will want a good UV haze filter for the best results. The color may seem like a drawback to some but it does help keep the lens cool in the sun. You can switch from auto focus to manual easily and also set it for fairly near or for over six meters to infinity.

Mode one of the dual IS system is best used for stationary subjects while the second more is for action. The IS can be used with a tripod with good results despite it being recommended not to. The IS is to compensate for camera movement not for the movement of the subjects so it more of a help of shooting by hand rather than tripod or when shooting from a vehicle.

The zoom system is actually quite easy to use but it takes some getting used to if you are experienced with the normal twist zooming systems. All you need to do is pull or push the lens to zoom while you can twist a ring to adjust the tension. You may feel some air when adjusting the lens but I have not experience a problem with dust getting inside the camera or lens. I would assume they thought of that and took precautions against it. There is no reason to worry about the push and pull zoom system.

The lens comes with the accessories needed. It has the tripod mount, lens hood and storage case. The tripod mounts is great for helping balance everything when using the tripod. If you mount the camera it is not balanced and could shake or even tip over due to the weight being off center. The lens case is soft and seal for protection with a zipper. The lens hood is included to help limit lens flare and could help protect the lens if the weather suddenly changes.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens is super, with its quick auto focus and clarity. It takes super sharp images and is better than any other lens I have used yet. It is well worth the price.
