Hacking Viewfinders

I really like the Canon G series but would like to hack the viewfinder to get 95-100 percent coverage. Does anyone know if this has been attempted? Thanks.

I don't know it is still true today. But in the past, the viewfinder coverage is limited by the pentaprism size, not by the viewfinder itself. What this means is that even after increasing the size of the viewfinder, the coverage will still be the original limiting size. In order for higher coverage, you'll have to change the pentaprism. I suspect that's the issue here.

Can the pentaprism be changed?

I suppose so. You can either make a bigger one yourself or take a bigger one from a different camera. If the current camera case is too small to fit the new pentaprism, you'll have to enlarge the camera case. Here is Wikipedia's article that shows you the concept of a pentaprism: Pentaprism.

Those are "through the lens" cameras, slr's. I have a point and shoot.

Ahhh . . . I missed that part.

With P&S . . . is there really a reason to talk about 100% viewfinder coverage? The optical viewfinder will not match the actual scene due to parallax effect anyway. Read about parallax on Wikipedia: Parallax

I really like the viewfinder in my DSLR so would love to have that in my point and shoot. And I really want the Canon G12 but not with the viewfinder they are offering.

Does the Canon G12 allow the LCD screen on the back to be used as an electronic viewfinder? If so, I suggest you use that instead of the optical viewfinder. It would be more like a DSLR and it will have no parallax effect.

I don't like using the LCD screen to take photos, I'm used to a viewfinder.
