S-Video Camcorder Cable Pin-Out

That cable must not be a S-VHS cable, it simply uses the same mini-DIN connector that the S-VHS cable uses. I hate it when manufacturers use a common cable in a non "standard" application. I can just see someone plugging that "S-VHS" connector into a monitor and wondering why there is no video.
And another major pet peeve, Why is there no audio on the S-VHS cannector? How many people only want to watch the video without sound? That is a real screw up there!

I agree - stupid to use it in a non-standard format... Is there a switch in the camera menu that turns the output to s-video?

I prefer a seperate video-audio connection... I can't stand scart leads - it is thoroughly irritating that they have stuck everything into one cable - it makes it very difficult to know what's going on... I've had to wire up hundreds of custom scart cables because modern day equipment only seems to carry scart in/out.

Most likley there is an S-video to Composite conversion going on inside this cable. This can be done simply using a small capacitor. Check google for S-video to composite i.e S-video to composite video adapter

With this conversion video is passed on one line, ground on another, and L & R audio the the two remaining lines.

I use a different Panasonic MiniDV camera.
It has ;
1) DV (firewire) in/out
2) AV in/out or phones
3) Mic
4) S-Video in/out

Recording setup that I use is ;
a) "DV out" to computer for recording direct to hard disk (using Kino on Ubuntu).
b) sound output from mixing desk, via audio isolation transformer and attenuator (roughly 25dB), into "Mic"
c) AV out used in "phones" mode goes to separate laptop running oscilloscope and spectrum analyser to check for sound clipping and quality (volume controlled at mixing desk).

and when I figure out how the s-video connection works (pinouts etc) then ...

d) "s-video out" for "On Screen Display" so I can use the remote to control zoom, mic zoom (on/off), wind cut (on/off), with an extension cable to allow the camera to be 3m up in the air. I don't need sound for this purpose. But if sound is available, then I can listen to that.
