warning on using the VistaQuest VQ1005 digital camera as a SD Card reader

The VistaQuest VQ1005 Digital Keychain Camera is a really fun and robust camera to carry around. As a bonus, it serves as a memory card reader as well. So far, it worked without any special driver installation in Linux or Windows XP.

However, here is lesson I learned the hard way. The VQ1005 can only read SD Cards that are formated with FAT. A SD Card in any other format , such as FAT32, will get reformatted to FAT when the VQ1005 is turned on or when inserted. The VQ1005 does this automatically.

I did that two nights ago when I stick my 2GB FAT32 card into it, full of data. When I saw nothing but a "DCIM" directory on the card, I was quite mad.

Try the program found here to find your data. I have had it work on cards that were formatted or corrupted several times and it almost always recovers the files. Even if it doesn't get it all maybe it can save some. PC INSPECTOR File Recovery 4.x
