glass in Quantaray 2X AF Teleconverter

I came to this site to find what others thought of Quantaray 2X AF Teleconverter, and this [page] gave me that info. Thank you. One big question though, I've been told that the glass in this teleconverter was junk, what do you think of it?

Hi Ricky,
I have a four element Quantaray 2x teleconverter. Although image quality is not the best (compared to 6 or 7 element converters), it is better than not having a 2x teleconverter. I discussed this issue in more details in the "Teleconverters: Quantaray 2x vs. Sigma 2x" thread (see the TrackBack section below).

Hiya Cheieh, have you tried any of the Canon converters, like the 1.4 Mk II or the 2.0 Mk II?

I have not tried any of the Canon teleconverters. What lenses do you want to use them with.

Name brand teleconverters are all designed to be used with specific lenses. Their optics are specifically designed to provide the best performance with one or two lenses. The Canon ones are specially designed to be used with the L-series telephoto lenses. They have protruding lens element that may prevent mounting on other lenses.

I had forgotten which lenses they are compatible with. And Canon doesn't provide that information on their web site. I've just sent an e-mail. Hopefully they will respond in a few days.

For now, you can refer to Sigma Teleconverter Compatibility.

Here is the response from Canon in regards to the compatibility of the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters:

Dear Chieh Cheng:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your lens compatibility inquiry.

The Extender EF 1.4x II and EF 2X II can only be used with the the following lenses:

Single fixed focal length L-series lenses of 135mm or greater (except the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens)

EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM

EF 70-200 f/2.8L USM

EF 70-200 f/4L USM

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions or concerns with the EF lens system.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

I have used the Quantaray 2x, If you disable autofocus, good results can be obtained.
