Saving Photos from Disney's PhotoPass

Disney PhotoPass prefers that you buy your photo in print or on a product it sells. It also lets you download high-resolution version of your photo for a price. It goes out of its way to prevent you from downloading the thumbnail image and the slightly larger preview version. It does this by disabling clicking and right-clicking on the image, so that you can't save the image from your web browser.

It's relenting effort to prevent downloading the thumbnail and preview images challenged me to find a way to do so; especially since the images are already downloaded to my computer for me to view on my browser. It feels like Disney is stomping on my right to use my own computer by protect me from getting to content it stored on my hard drive already.

It's obvious that Disney took this protection very seriously. Because the source HTML codes doesn't show the image path either. It's protected by layers after layers of JavaScript code and server back-end processing.

In the end, I laughed at myself for spending so much time playing with the browser and I laughed at Disney for spending so much money building the protection. Because, in order for me to see the the photos, the photos has to be on my computer and it has to be displayed on the screen. Any photo editing software with a screen shot functionality can capture the image and save it.

With Gimp 1.2.5, a free image editing software for Linux, Mac OS X, and Winows, you can go to "File" -> "Acquire" -> "Screen Shot..." to capture a window or the whole screen.

With Gimp 2.6.2, select "File" -> "Create" -> "Screen Shot..." to capture single window or whole screen.

After you've captured the screen, crop the image down to size. You can even capture all the decorations that Disney surrounded your photo with. And then save it. You'll end up with a low-resolution (400x285) version of the photo.

This is a fun exercise to defeat Disney PhotoPass download prevention efforts. But you might still consider purchasing the high-resolution version for safe keeping.
