Linux

Anyone know how to get the pics off of this in Linux? From what I can see so far it appears to be a prorietary format. Do you know if gphoto2 has it in their library yet?

It doesn't act as a mass storage device? If it does, it should just show up as a drive in Linux. Depending on if you have auto-mount turned on, it may show up automatically on your desktop or you'll have to mount it first.

Well, I feel like a dumb $&!~. It is the #66379. So it is assummed it is a mass storage device? I see no indications under dmesg, or in dev. I will pound on it some more though.

Does it turn on after you plug it in? Or do you have to turn it on first? You're gonna need to get some kind of an indication in dmesg first . . .

I have a Sakar keychain camera marketd by digital concepts.

It describes itself as the smallest camera. Probably the poorest anyway.

Here is a command that works under linux for grabbing the pictures off of it:

gphoto2 --camera='Argus DC-1510' --get-all-files

This camera and a number of other Sakar cameras are supported quite well under Gphoto, at this point. However, I suspect that the above command will not work. Do not be afraid to try, simply,

gphoto2 -P

if a camera is supported. Even if the camera is not supported, then no ill consequences. The command just won't work, that's all.

Please note that any camera when connected to the USB port is detected automatically, by its USB Vendor/Product number and *not* repeat *not* by its name. In this respect, the name painted on the plastic case is an irrelevancy.

Also the suggestion in the previous letter, to try to force gphoto2 to treat the Digital Keychain camera as an Argus DC-1510 will probably cause the camera not to work even if it would, because they have different chipsets and that command will probably override the autodetection which is built into gphoto2.

My Sakar Digital Keychain camera has in it a Mars MR97310 chip, not anything from SQ Technologies, at all. Of course, understand that on that point the camera "manufacturers" have a frequently recurring routine of switching chips inside of a "model" from one production run to another and do not bother to tell us. Which only underscores my point about not trying to second-guess the autodetection which is built-in functionality in libgphoto2.

Feel free to contact me through [email protected] or [email protected]

in case of further questions.

The 5.1 megapixel version of the Digital Concepts camera does work pretty well under Linux. It uses FAT16 formated SDcards, which can be mounted normally. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and the camera came up as a mass storage device when it was plugged in via the included USB cable. F-Spot also immediately came up and asked me to import the pictures.

The videos the camera records are "Motion JPEG" format in AVI containers. These are a pretty open format and they convert easily to other formats, including Ogg Theora, using ffmpeg utilities.

I am reading this forum because the only think I cannot figure out is how to make it run as a web-cam. Anyone have any advice regarding using this camera with Cheese and Ekiga?

30690 Digital Video Camera

I mounted this thing and the files are for pics: jpx & for vids avx
what the hoot is that all about ? the software does not work so well with wine even when I try to import the photos that I've copied from the usb to a folder, a no go. So the software does not even want to recognize the format which is some encoding..

As for trying to get the images via gphoto2 -P: *** Error ***
An error occurred in the io-library ('Unknown port'): No error description available
*** Error (-5: 'Unknown port') ***

I recently stumbled on the Sakar "Digital Concepts" keychain camera that I got for about $10 a couple of years ago. I can confirm that the current gphoto2 is able to detect and retrieve photos and videos from it just fine on Linux.

I do wish I could figure out how to enable webcam mode, but it's not really a big deal. For a $10 toy, I'm reasonably happy just to see it work.
