BG-E1 battery grip being phased out?

Being used to vertical shutter releases on several of my SLR-cameras, I have wanted the BG-E1 vertical battery grip for a long time (see my "Canon Battery Grip BG-ED3" article). Like every other Canon vertical battery grips, the BG-E1 battery grip is specifically made a Canon EOS camera. In this case, the BG-E1 is made for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. I finally broke down yesterday and bought one; a demo from Adorama. It's the only used one that I could find anywhere on-line.

Why did I insist on buying a used one, you may ask? I didn't. I was actually looking for a new one. But I looked at the four places that I would buy camera equipment (see my "Where to buy cameras?" article), none other than B&H had any new BG-E1 in stock. New BG-E1 doesn't even show up in Adorama's online catalog; only a demo version is available. Amazon has the typical buy "1 used & new" message; a symptom when it stops stocking an item.

The Digital Rebel is already obsolete. All this made me wonder if Canon is phasing out accessories for the Digital Rebel as well. Right now, I am just glad that I am still able to purchase a BG-E1 before it is actually all gone.

I am very excited today, because I just received the BG-E1 vertical battery grip that I ordered. I ordered this grip as a used demo from Adorama and I didn't know what to expect. Usually, when I visit stores like the local Best Buy, demo products are usually badly beat-up from mishandling and many times even broken. So when I ordered this used demo, in my mind, I was taking a real gamble.

It turned out that the gamble paid off. When I received it, it is in a box that is in perfect shape. The box looked brand new and is even gleaming on the surface. I almost thought that Adorama shipped me a brand new BG-E1. But surely they wouldn't make that kind of mistake. Plus, they had no more BG-E1 grips in stock. I took the content out and everything looked perfectly packed in the box. I have no doubt that it is a demo, but I can see no wear on the battery grip.

So far, I am really happy to have finally gotten a vertical shutter grip for my Digital Rebel. Although the battery grip is extremely similar to the BG-ED3 grip for my D30, there are a number of distinct differences. I look forward to reviewing it on this web site.

Title: digital camera life cycle is a little too short for comfort
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: It is so unlike Canon to phase out SLR camera accessories so quickly (see my recent "BG-E1 battery grip being phased out?" post). Normally film EOS accessories float around for years. But maybe this is becoming history as digital SLR cameras are starting to be revamped as quickly as personal compute . . .
